The Birmingham Association of Black Journalists (BABJ) is offering scholarships to students pursuing degrees in media-related fields at accredited colleges and universities. Scholarships will be awarded in August 2023 during the NABJ National Conference in Birmingham. The amount of the scholarship will vary.
Scholarship Applicants must:
- Be an Alabama resident enrolled in an in state or out of state institution, or be enrolled in a college or university in the state of Alabama.
- Have completed at least one year (30 semester hours) of study with a major in journalism, broadcasting, multi-media, advertising, public relations, news photography, news graphics, or related areas.
- Students must demonstrate an interest in the media industry by participating in campus media, internships or other practical learning opportunities.
Oliver Brewer Scholarship, named in honor of longtime radio broadcast journalist and former BABJ president Oliver “The Master Brewer” Brewer. This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing degrees in broadcasting.
Emory O. Jackson Scholarship, named in honor of the legendary editor of The Birmingham World, a premier publication in Birmingham’s African American community, especially at the height of the civil rights movement. Jackson led the publication’s efforts in chronicling the movement and was known as a fearless voice for the community.
Ingrid Kindred Scholarship, named in honor of longtime journalist Ingrid Kindred, who was a voice for the community while working more than 25 years as a journalist at The Birmingham News. Kindred was the driving force behind the establishment of BABJ, hosting the first meetings in her home. Recipients of this scholarship should be pursuing degrees in journalism
Roy Wood Sr. Scholarship, named in honor of Roy Wood Sr., the voice, heart and soul of “One Black Man’s Opinion,” a syndicated radio commentary aired on stations across the country for many years. Wood, a seasoned journalist, sought to ensure that residents in urban communities were well informed. Recipients of this scholarship should be pursuing degrees at historically black colleges or universities.
Dr. Jesse Lewis Scholarship, named in honor of media pioneer and educator Dr. Jesse Lewis, founder of The Birmingham Times, an advertising and public relations firm, and other successful businesses. Recipients of this scholarship should be pursuing degrees in media management, public relations or maintain positions of leadership in campus media.
